About the Book
Reversing Misinformation: How to Help your Family, Friends & Community shows non-experts how to reverse toxic misinformation and decrease its spread. The book provides specific insights, techniques, and strategies for engaging and talking with misinformed family, friends, and strangers – as well as how to address community situations and policy issues involving misinformation.
Misinformation is harming relationships, public health, civil society, the economy and national security. Revering Misinformation empowers regular people to have productive one-on-one conversations with misinformed people you know – and how to successfully enlist others for those discussions – so they can be part of the solution to reducing the harmful and toxic effects misinformation is having on them, their families and society.
The book also includes information about how people can reduce misinformation in their communities, and how social media and artificial intelligence (A.I.) are influencing the creation and spread of misinformation.

I wrote this book because early in the COVID-19 pandemic friends were asking me how to respond when their friends and family were repeating misinformation about vaccines and COVID. They quickly found that trying to correct them wasn’t successful, and I couldn’t find useful resources or guidance for them. (The book explains why presenting facts to correct misinformation is counter-productive, and shows another path that can successfully loosen people’s grip on misinformation.) My other inspirations for writing Reversing Misinformation was this quote attributed to Teddy Roosevelt: “Complaining about a problem without offering a solution is called whining,” which is why the book provides practical actions and is as an easily readable guide that includes a few worksheet pages for people to make notes about their specific situations with misinformed people in their lives.
I strongly believe that if we don’t act now to reverse misinformation—and prevent it from spreading in the future—we’ll be unprepared for future microbial epidemics and other social disruptions.

- “[Reversing Misinformation] is a quick read, and also a substantial one. … Mike’s book is a handbook for leveraging and preserving trusted relationships, interacting with misinformed people. protecting your community, and understanding the risks and (maybe? kinda? sorta?) potential benefits of social media. Proceeding from a place of empathy and kindness Mike has provided a framework to counter misinformation, to avoid becoming an “altruistic spreader of misinformation, and to support and strengthen media literacy within your network.” [Community Non-Profit Leader]
- “Words cannot express how relevant the topic has become, and I am very grateful that Michael took the initiative to write such a clear, pragmatic and useful manual for everyday interactions with our peers, family members, friends.” [Lawyer & Public Health Advocate]
- “Definitely worth reading – good advice and insights!” [Good Reads]
- “In an era of vaccine hesitancy, despite the ravages of Covid-19 and the reemergence of measles, this book provides valuable options to battle the misinformation that plagues our country.” [Former BioPharma R&D Leader]
- “If I were still teaching at [the University], I would use this book as part of our class readings. As a society, we have an abundance of information it seems on every topic we might imagine. I would value your book’s organization as a guide for exploring topics that many might find challenging or even controversial. The book’s organization is excellent including the topics covered in each chapter. In particular, I valued your commonsense observations about Artificial Intelligence.” [Former Senior White House Career Official]
- “Highly recommend. Thoughtful and practical! It is full of reasoned, principled and caring advice.” [Facebook Comment]

In the summer of 2024, I did a Kickstarter campaign to spread awareness of the harms of misinformation, and to engage people in helping me develop and publish the book. Those individuals – and others who helped bring the book into physical form – are listed below. Their names are not provided to protect their privacy because of the intense vitriol that has followed some people advocating for vaccinations or other public health measures.
